Rep GK Butterfield and His Campaign of Foreign Donations...

polifrog

GK Butterfield has only himself and the Obama Administration's graping at straws to thank for bringing his own foreign campaign donors to the forefront of this election...

Via the CCTA:

President Obama isn't the only Democrat to accept foreign money to influence polices in Washington.

...

Rep. Butterfield co-sponsored a bill that would give Bermudian homeowners and businesses susceptible to hurricanes and floods tax credits and financial assistance. An amendment to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus) would set aside part of the $787B for hazard mitigation. Rep. Butterfield received a donation for his services. He also received donations from British Petroleum (BP) which is a foreign corporation.

Update:
My apologies. I forgot my links above as comment number one indicates:

  • Links for BP Donation to Butterfield Via Oil Industry PAC here and here.

  1. Check you facts. The only thing worse than a wrong is repeating a moron's mistake. And wrong on both counts.

Butterfield (just like all members of Congress) is barred from receiving corporate donation, foreign or domestic.

I couldn't find any bill that Butterfield co-sponsored that would set aside money for Bermudians. In fact, there are only five House and Senate bills that mention Bermuda. Butterfield is a co-sponsor of one, but it's a resolution applauding the country for taking people who were held at Guantanamo.

Do everyone and check the facts before blindly posting. It does everyone a disservice destroys the credibility of people with legitimate criticisms of Butterfield.

  2. Thanks for pointing out that I forgot my links.

Here is a recent example of an official who has received foreign donations via politico. (link at end)

"BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.

On top of that, the oil giant has spent millions each year on lobbying — including $15.9 million last year alone — as it has tried to influence energy policy.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records."
