Throwing it Away on Chinqua Penn?

polifrog

News-Record:

Some of Rockingham County’s most prominent citizens sat pleased and enthused that sunny day at Chinqua Penn Plantation as cigarette millionaire Calvin Phelps outlined his plans for the historic mansion.

...

Buying the estate on Wentworth Street ultimately thrust Phelps’ once-thriving Renegade Tobacco and its affiliates into bankruptcy. And because of the way Phelps financed the renovation of his new digs, the Penns’ exquisite furniture and artwork is fodder for an upcoming auction in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, expected to raise $2 million from personal property, including many of the Gatsby-era mansion’s most singular treasures.

The very local damage of poor national politics.
